OXFORD TIMES REVIEW: Oxford Philomusica Baroque II Concert

Monday, March 21st, 2011

The second of Oxford Philomusica’s pair of Baroque concerts was a charming, joyful stroll through some familiar and not-so-familiar works of the baroque era. With Marios Papadopoulos conducting from the harpsichord in his usual meticulous style, and the orchestra responding with warmth and enthusiasm, this was a treat of an evening; two hours of exquisite, unalloyed pleasure.

Perhaps the most interesting inclusion in the programme was the Oxford premiere of a recently-discovered Vivaldi piece, Il Gran Mogol, a flute concerto in D minor. This glorious gem was part of a collection belonging to the Marquesses of Lothian until 1991, when it was purchased by the National Archives of Scotland, and received its modern premiere at Perth Concert Hall on January 26. Flautist Anthony Robb was clearly enjoying himself, producing an appropriately light touch in the fast outer movements, while gently caressing the notes of the sublime Larghetto. (more…)

CONCERT REVIEW: Through the eyes of a 9 year old

Monday, November 29th, 2010

On Sunday 28 November  Marios Papadopoulos led a Directing from the keyboard masterclass with Alissa Firsova.  As part of theYoung Artists’ Platform, the orchestra and pianists worked on Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A.

Dear Mr Papadopoulos,

My name is Fergus. I am 9 years old. This evening I attended your directing from the keyboard masterclass at the Sheldonian.

I was not allowed to stay for the main concert because my Dad said I have school tomorrow and that it was too late in the evening. I really enjoyed watching the masterclass and thought it was brilliant that an event was held early enough in the evening that I could still attend. Thank you for including this in your programme.

I had heard of the Oxford Philomusica from one of the Mums at my school in Stoke Row who also likes classical music. I thought that the Orchestra were fantastic. Even my Dad, who doesn’t really like music, really enjoyed it and I will be asking my Mum and Dad for tickets to a concert during the school holidays or on a Friday or Saturday night as part of my next birthday present.

Thank you again for letting me come and enjoy seeing the Masterclass.

Yours sincerely

Fergus

Young Artists Platform: 28 November, 6.30pm

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

There is a Young Artists Platform before Classical Romanticism on Sunday 28 November 2010.  Marios Papadopoulos will give a ’Directing from the Keyboard’ masterclass from 6.30-7.30pm.

It is unusual that a student (albeit with one foot already on the international performing stage) plays with and conducts a professional orchestra. As part of our Young Artists’ Platform, Alissa Firsova – you may have encountered her as a composer whose work was recently premiered at the Proms – will work with Marios Papadopoulos and Oxford Philomusica on Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A, K. 488 in a public ‘Directing from the Keyboard’ masterclass. It should be a fascinating insight on how professional musicians interact and respond to leadership and what tools a leader needs to have and use to coax the best out of the orchestra.

The class begins at 6.30pm in the Sheldonian Theatre and admission is free.
