Richard Dilley’s highly successful musical career has been built on the rock solid foundations of childhood experience as a pianist and, more especially, as a choirboy growing up in Hertford, where his ‘good ear’ was swiftly recognised and prompted the suggestion of learning the horn at the age of eleven. A few years later, after a thoroughly enjoyable eighteen month diversion into the world of model engineering, Richard found himself at Trinity College of Music, studying with Mike Purton and winning the Founder’s Prize in 1994. Oxford Philomusica are continuing their Children for £1 scheme at the Christmas Concert with Howard Goodall on Thursday 16 December 2010, 7.30pm. (£1 tickets now sold out)
The Music
It is an ideal concert to introduce children aged 7+ to classical music. The music is very varied with orchestral and choral music spanning from the Baroque to C20th.

Interspersed between the sleigh rides, Christmas concertos and carols, Goodall presents music from the soundtrack to the ITV natural history series, “The Seasons with Alan Titchmarsh” and from his stunning new album “Pelican In The Wilderness”.
Child activities
• Join us for the child-friendly intro at 6.30pm with a guide to the concert and listening tips. Bring your singing voice, something that jingles and a question to ask about the music.

Hard to starboard!I caught a train last Sunday, travelling among a mixture of people who were united by their slightly puzzled expression when they noticed my beautifully-crafted eye-pencil moustache. Once at the Oxford Philomusica Family Concert I was in good company, surrounded by pirates, mermaids, and even a ship’s cat, who had come to hear the fishy tales of Cabin-boy Al.Captain Alice kept the visiting shipmates in good shape, and they created enough pirate flags, hats, and pictures of sea creatures to fit out a fleet. Their rousing cries of ‘it’s a pirate’s life for me!’ and swashbuckling cutlass conducting kept the scurvy curs of the Oxford Philomusica in excellent order, and some even found the ship’s treasure: the chance to play the violin! The chocolate coins in the chest were only won through the means of music. Arrrrrr!

Playing for treasure
Al led the audience through a hornpipe and then it was time to disembark. Our guests left, some with a worrying selection of scars and pirate tattoos courtesy of our face painter. Farewell me hearties!
The next Family Concert is 0n 27 March 2011. Book now to avoid disappointment.

Several Oxford Philomusica players have welcomed new arrivals to their families.

Violinist Liz Hodson and violist husband Mark Chivers’ first child, Joshua, arrived in January. Liz’s first concert as a mother was Mahler 1 with Oxford Philomusica at the Sheldonian in March, a performance she loved being part of despite leaving Joshua in the care of someone else for the first time.
Viola player Mike Briggs and his wife celebrated the birth of Connie in February, a sister for their two year old son. Connie was two weeks late and her delayed arrival meant Mike had to keep his phone on silent for two Oxford Phil concerts in case of emergency but in the end she conveniently chose to make her appearance on a free day!
Yu Yasuraoka, co-leader, welcomed her first grandchild.

Discover Classical Music
Ever been frustrated that you can’t get a babysitter for a concert? Don’t bother, as The Eight Seasons on Saturday 15 May is ideal to introduce children aged 6+ to the classical concert. The concert has been specially designed to be accessible for all the family so you can enjoy the excitement of an orchestral concert together.

‘We’ve never been brave enough to take him to a classical concert before because we were worried he’d make a noise or get bored, but he lapped up every minute.’
THE EIGHT SEASONS
Oxford Philomusica’s recently appointed new leader, Tamás András, will make his solo debut with the orchestra in a fascinating double bill featuring Vivaldi’s much loved and familiar Four Seasons juxtaposed with Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. The glorious Baroque concertos will be followed by the Argentinian master of tango’s vibrant and passionate twentieth century work.
The concept that at any given moment the two hemispheres of our planet have opposite seasons – eight in total – is the inspiration for this novel combination of works, all of which are lively, engaging pieces and extremely child-friendly. Doors open at 7pm for families with a treasure trail, FREE activity packs and musical craft activities during the interval.
Tickets £37, £26, £17.50, £10 (child tickets ½ price or £1 in the Upper Gallery) on 020 8450 1060

The focus of our 2010 season is on individual players from the Orchestra.

We began the new year with a traditional Viennese-style concert in the Town Hall featuring works by the Strauss family. This was the first time OP put on a concert reminiscent of those we all enjoy around this time of the year at Vienna’s Musikverein.

LADYBIRDS and bumblebees flew into Oxford Town Hall for a celebration of musical fun.
A creepy-crawly concert entitled Bugs was staged by Oxford Philomusica, the city’s professional symphony orchestra, yesterday.
Numbers included the Ugly Bug Ball by the Sherman Brothers, which featured in the 1963 Disney animation Summer Magic, and The Flight of the Bumble Bee by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Hundreds of children dressed as bugs tapped their feet to the well-known tunes during the show presented by Alasdair Malloy.
While the musicians were warming up, children had their faces painted and perfected their costumes with insect antennae.
